Miss Minnesota 2010 Travels

Tonight is my last official night of being Miss Minnesota. All week long I have been asked "How do you feel?" My response, "it depends on the hour!" One hour I feel strong and excited for the next Miss Minnesota and the journey she is about to embark on, and the next I feel so sad because I don't want it to end!

This week of competition for the contestants has been truly incredible. This group of ladies is outstanding and so sweet! I am so proud of each representative and how well they have all done so far. This has been a group that has really come together helping one another with hair and make-up, but also with really connecting through heartfelt conversations.

I just cannot believe it has been a year since I competed for Miss Minnesota 2010! My year flew by! As Miss Minnesota, I have accomplished so many of my goals and I truly hope I have made you proud as your representative. I wanted to give you a bit of insight into the paperwork I submitted last year when competing, which asked the question about the legacy I wished to leave if chosen as Miss Minnesota 2010. I wrote,

"Every one of us is unique and bears an intangible quality and unmatched story that has the potential to inspire a multitude. Through the confidence and strength I’ve gained from my service work for the MAO and countless Inspiring Americans, I’ve learned to use both my gifts and my life challenges to benefit others. As Miss Minnesota 2010, I hope I’m remembered for inspiring others to look beyond seemingly impossible circumstances to build inner strength to stand strong with hope and purpose. To establish such a powerful network of inspiration would be a great legacy to pass on."

Throughout this year with my Night of Inspiration Concerts, fundraising for CMNH, school visits, and media interviews, I have met countless inspiring individuals. It was those people and their inspiring stories, as well as my God-given gift of music, that fueled me to continue working diligently to hopefully inspire others. I cannot express in words how grateful and thankful I am for this experience, for this chance to make a difference and for the love and support of so many. You reading this, supporting me, means the world to me and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I will never forget what one of the State Board Members said to the 2010 contestants last year. The judges aren't picking a winner out of a group of representatives, but a representative out of a group of winners. I wish the next Miss Minnesota the absolute best and encourage her to remember the 3 G's: be Gracious, be Genuine, and be a Gift to others. Thank you for being my gift this year.

The countdown has begun...

Hello Friends!

I really can’t believe how the time is flying! There is so much to update with only two weeks left before Miss Minnesota week! I can just feel the excitement from the local titleholders and friends and remember all too well the same feeling only a year ago! Now, my excitement is the anticipation for their experience at Miss Minnesota and for how truly amazing my year has been as Miss Minnesota.

First of all, the last Night of Inspiration Concert was amazing!! Thank you so much to the former Miss Minnesota’s who participated; it was great to have you all there! For those of you who couldn’t make it, we had many amazing former Miss Minnesota’s come back including Miss Minnesota 1968! Our state has always been known to have talented titleholders, so I can’t say enough about how great the talents were. Moreover, hearing each Miss Minnesota share about who has inspired her and what her year was like offered all of us great insight into the history and growth of the program. Through this successful endeavor, we raised some money to help support the next Miss Minnesota while also sparking a vision to hopefully include this event in the program for years to come.

I haven’t traveled as much in the past month so it was great to able to travel to Canby, MN to visit our water bottle sponsor, “Water Billboards,” and to visit their elementary, middle, and high schools. Visiting Water Billboards was so cool; it was fascinating to see how they make the eco friendly water bottles. They literally are made from a tiny little tube and then blown up to any size water bottle. They also have a great marketing tool of creating your own private label on the water bottles. On the personal side of my life, I am back in school for the summer semester. Things have been a bit more hectic, but it feels great to be back! I thought I would be a bit rusty, but I picked right back up by composing orchestral music, and, I must say, I love it! Also, my piano students had their end of the year recital this past weekend, and I am so incredibly proud of them. It has been a commitment on my end and my piano families to be flexible with my busy schedule (since it is 3 1/2 hours away from where I live in St. Paul!) I feel so blessed that I have been able to use my gift of teaching to have my own private piano studio. Although, as much as I love performing, I really loved taking a back seat and watching my students perform. Seeing all their hard work this past year pay off was so rewarding!

As my appearances draw to end during this final month of my reign, I find myself saying “This is my last school visit” or “This is my last visit to a place I’ve never been as Miss MN,” but I know my life will be full of adventure so that keeps me optimistic! I am afraid to say that my next blog may be my last as Miss Minnesota 2010. I have such mixed emotions of giving up this amazing title. Thank you to my readers and supporters; you are such a blessing to me!

"Busy as a Bee"

I think I just had the busiest weekend I have ever had as Miss Minnesota so far! It started off with a Night of Inspiration on Friday night in Brainerd, which was a tremendous concert! There were several moments in the night where I’m certain there was not a dry eye in the house! Since all of these concerts are a fundraiser for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, I just have to share how Parker, a Gillette patient, inspired all of us! His mom, who shared his incredible story, told how Parker was born very prematurely and only weighed a pound. He was diagnosed in early life with cerebral palsy and was told he would never be able to walk. Parker told us how he is graduating from 6th grade this year and said by next year he wants to be able to walk. He has been doing intense therapy on his own at home with the help of his mother and grandmother, and was able to demonstrate for all of us on stage how his persistence has enabled him to take two or three steps with a cane! His determination and indomitable spirit are truly inspiring! His story will along with others from the concert will be up on whohasinspiredyou.com very soon. After the concert, I drove to St. Paul to sleep for a few hours so that I could do an appearance at the Tracie Joy McBride Scholarship Fundraiser on Saturday morning. As the two-time recipient of scholarships provided by the TJM Fund (including the Quality of Life award in 2010 and the Talent Award in 2007), it was important for me to share with the donors how much the scholarship benefits young ladies like myself and how much the quality of life award, in particular, meant to me. It was a true honor to know that I was chosen as a woman who represents the values and ideals that characterized Tracie, being a woman of integrity with strong morals and values, before her life was tragically taken. This honorary scholarship is such a blessing and a wonderful way to always remember and pay tribute to Tracie. After the scholarship fundraiser, I drove to the Duluth area to attend the “Bridesmaid Ball” in Superior, WI to help fundraise for Gillette. There were several families there from the Duluth area, which go to Gillette Hospital. I met a little girl named Emma who, like Parker, was also told she would have difficulties walking/running. Thanks to the incredible care at Gillette, she is signed up for dance lessons next year and was running all over the place…she clearly had no problem getting around! This event was a blast because I got to judge the Bridesmaid dresses in categories like “Most like a Disney princess, Blast from the Past, Judges choice,” etc…as you can imagine, there were a variety of dresses! Plus, what an awesome opportunity for women to actually re-use those bridesmaid dresses, unlike the movie 27 Dresses!
After the event was over, I hopped back in my car to head over to my hometown, Detroit Lakes, where I had just a few hours to sleep and then was up early to do morning mass. This coming week is Holy Week in the Catholic Church, so as a music director it is A LOT of music to plan and prepare. Needless to say, I needed to have another rehearsal with my choir!

From Detroit Lakes, I headed back to the Twin Cities where I performed at the Celebrate RISE! Organization. Rise is committed to helping people with significant disabilities and other barriers to obtain jobs or living arrangements. I performed my original music for about an hour while over 500 people were registering and getting settled. This organization is incredible, which was evidenced by some of the remarkable stories of people involved who are deemed their ‘Rising Stars!’ Check out their website www.rise.org for more information on what they offer to the disabled.

To end the weekend, I judged a talent show at Hudson High School. I was a ‘celebrity judge,’ which I must say was quite fun to be the “judger” twice this weekend rather than the “judged.” It feels really good to be on the other side of that now!

It is no understatement to say this weekend was jam-packed with inspiration! I wish you all a blessed Easter with hopes that you will be together with your families. I am so excited that my whole family is getting together, which means I get to spend time with my niece and nephews! I love being an Aunt; it is one of the best jobs…next to being a mother, I assume!

A Long Awaited Spring Brings Excitement!

Spring is here... and with spring comes Miss Minnesota workshop, which was this past Saturday. While I previously met all the contestants when they won their respective pageant, having them all together was really amazing. It is truly a fantastic group of women who speak so well! I really can’t wait for Miss MN week...I remember having so many awesome memories from my years of competing and now it is exciting to be on the other side of it all!

This weekend also brought the Miss Minnesota's Outstanding Teen Pageant. The young ladies competing did so well! Special congrats to the 2nd runner-up, Brianna, and 1st runner up, Bailey, both of whom I know personally! Claire, the interview winner, is from my home-town, so I was proud of her too. And, many congratulations to the new Outstanding Teen, Alexis Houlle, and now my 'little sister' for the last few months I have left! I have some great memories with Kat, the former Miss Outstanding Teen, so congrats to her on a great year.

I grew up in Detroit Lakes and went to Holy Rosary School from Kindergarten - 8th grade. One of my favorite teachers at the school asked me to write them a school song--not like a "rah rah, fight fight" type chant/song, but more of a song that encompasses what the school stands for like its faith. This is a song that will be performed at special events such as the 8th grade graduation. What an amazing honor it was to be asked to do that!! I knew it would be a great experience for me so I wrote it before Miss America and finally had the opportunity to teach it to a very cute and energized school of students last week. Once I get a recording of the kids singing it, I will certainly share it with you; they will, no doubt, sing it much better than I can!

On Wednesday last week, I went to one of my favorite places: Dairy Queen! They had their kick-off fundraiser for the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. I gave up ice cream for lent so that was REALLY HARD for me to refrain from indulging (what was I thinking knowing I would be spending a day at Dairy Queen…I suppose that is all the more reason to give it up-a true sacrifice!)...anyways, I am looking forward to Miracle Treat Day when I can eat for an excellent cause! It is appearances like this that make me so happy about the Miss America and CMNH partnership. It perfectly ties together the service component of our Organization, and continually makes me so grateful to be able to help out in big ways or small for such an incredible organization.

Next up, another "Night of Inspiration"Concert in just a week! I have not hosted one since December, so I’m very excited! This one is on Friday April 15th at 7pm at the Tornstrom Auditorium in Brainerd, MN. I only have two concerts left this year, so please join us so you have an even greater understanding of the mission and vision I have devoted my year to. It is going to be a great night of talent and inspirational stories!

Where does the time go?

I can’t believe how the time is flying! March has pretty much come and gone with a few nice days of weather to tease us before winter had to reappear with more snow…when will it end?! Luckily, I have had great appearances to keep my days busy and my mood uplifted!

A really fun recent appearance was the IHOP Pancake Day -the day when calories don’t count because they are for charity (perfect justification, right?)! I visited a few IHOP Restaurants that day to promote and raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. At one of the restaurants, I had a pancake-stacking contest with a little boy from Gillette and he beat me fair and square! I’m pretty sure it was all the sugar in the pancakes and syrup he had that morning before 8am!

The following week, I had the opportunity to burn off some calories (many from the previous week of pancake eating!) again in promotion of CMNH when I participated in a Bike-a-thon at Cottage Grove Middle School. The school raises around $10,000 each year in a single week devoted to biking; it’s pretty incredible to see the kids so passionate about helping out! As for me, I was happy to hop on a bike and sign autographs at the same time…taking multi-tasking to the next level!

Next up was a St. Patrick’s Day celebration through the “O’ Gong Show.” I had the unique opportunity to judge the Carmichael Lynch ‘talent competition’ where I hit a big gong to exile a person if I didn’t like their talent! Those who didn’t get gonged received a score 1-10. This experience definitely gave me faith in MAO and the very talented young women who participate…but, if you happen to be in need of a talent, check out the picture of a dapper young man playing the recorder with his nose! I saw many unusual talents to say the least, but it was all in good fun and quite entertaining!

From one music event to the next…I do love these appearances that involve music! This past Saturday, I was at the Mall of America for the Music Link Foundation. Their mission is to give any child music lessons regardless of financial circumstances. So this weekend they held their annual ‘play-a-thon’ to help raise funds to continue their mission. I emceed the event and also performed some of my original pieces. Check out their website at www.musiclinkfoundation.org where you can volunteer to teach or make a donation.

Being a piano teacher myself, I find such pleasure in seeing so many students devoted to music. I truly feel like I was given the gift of teaching and I can honestly say it doesn’t even feel like ‘work’ because I enjoy it so much! Plus, it is always a thrill when one of my piano students wins the State Contest, which happened this year along with four of my other students being chosen as alternate winners.

This brings me to the recent publicity I’ve had with my own music! WCCO (channel 4) did a very nice story on my piano compositions, which made me quite excited to begin school again and finish my composition degree. If you didn’t catch it, CLICK HERE to watch! Miss Minnesota: The Picture Perfect Job!

Hello Everyone! I decided to do a picture blog because I have had a busy two weeks and wanted to show you what I was up to!
Last weekend I went to Two Harbors (near Duluth) to crown Kimberly Jacobson the new Miss North Shore. I was able to spend the weekend with Kimberly and her family and Vicki, the new director of the pageant. I was given the royal treatment and had a blast at their festival, "Winter Frolic."

The people that live in Two Harbors are extremely tough. The bitter cold weather didn't bother them or keep them from watching the parade and partaking in the weekend's events!

Kimberly and I did a lot of events during the weekend to kick off her new title and to have the community get to know her and myself and what the Miss America Organization is all about! Did I mention it was really cold out!?

The cold didn't keep me from having fun either, and we did get to warm up indoors with hot cocoa and face painting.

I believe this was called "Swooshing." If you haven't "swooshed" before, then you are missing out! They had "Swooshing" races to raise money for charity, so I decided I needed to try it and it is was so much fun!

To continue with "I love to Read Month" in February, I visited three other schools either reading to classrooms or speaking to the schools on ways they can be an inspiration to others by using their gifts and talents!
I am really loving these types of appearances. Witnessing the enthusiasm from these young students makes me excited for their future and what it holds.

Congratulations to the new Miss West Metro and Miss City of Lakes, Allison Lordboch and Samantha Phillipi! All of the Miss Minnesota locals have been crowned so congratulations to you all! What an exciting journey you have ahead of you as you prepare for the job of Miss Minnesota 2011 along with Miss Minnesota week in June!

Congratulations to the new Miss Coon Rapids, Megan Ehlert, who was crowned on Saturday evening! How exciting it has been to see all these titleholders for 2011!! I do want to mention how impressed I was with the organization of the pageant, which would not be possible without the hardworking VOLUNTEERS that make it possible. Thank you to each and every local director and the volunteers for each pageant. Without you this organization would not be where it is today. I hope you know how much I appreciate you and so do your titleholders and community! Keep up the great work! The last pageant of the season (Sweeps) is coming up soon and then we are on track to Miss Minnesota week… but again, I don’t want to think about that yet!

I have had some fun appearances these past few days! On Monday night, I was in a town called Lake Park where I was invited to perform and speak during their middle school and high school pops concert for jazz band and choir. Even though it was absolutely bitter cold outside, there was a great turnout and the concert was so fun! The kids sang some of my favorite pop songs; I told them it was better than the halftime show during the Superbowl! I also talked about the importance of music in my life, the Miss America Scholarship Program, and a bit about Inspiring America and CMN. I had my CD’s on hand and raised another $170 for CMN!

So in my last blog, I told you that I thought I might be in a commercial during the Superbowl, but later realized that it was FOX news that did a segment on me and CMN. Click here to watch! I can’t tell you how much I appreciated FOX news doing this for me! I do apologize if I misled you or if you were specifically watching the Superbowl to see “my” commercial; I certainly appreciate your support though!

This month is “I Love To Read” month, which has me visiting classrooms to read. Today I read to a third grade class at World Cultures Magnet School in St. Paul. After I was done reading, they asked me questions about being Miss Minnesota. I forgot how much I love this part! I was asked if I get to ride in a limo to my appearances. You know, that’s not a bad idea! I will work on that for the next Miss Minnesota. ;)
I also was asked if there was a King, Mr. Minnesota and if my crown was real. Kids just make me smile! I left them all with a signed autograph and a CD for the class to listen to during their study time. They were such a great group of kids so I really look forward to the next class visits.

If there is ever a month to show extra support for reading, this is the month to do it! We all know how reading is so important especially with the lower literacy rates in our country. If you get a chance, I encourage you to volunteer to read at your local school or library!

Back to life, Back to reality!

It has been a little over two weeks since I have been home from Miss America and I can’t quite believe that actually happened…what an amazing experience that was!!! I have been keeping in touch with a few of the other state titleholders, which is one of the greatest things I know I will take from this experience. The new Miss America, Theresa, wrote all of us a really nice email. Considering how crazy busy she is right now, I found it so thoughtful that she took the time to write us a message.

While I have not had many appearances since I have been home it has been a great opportunity to catch up on sleeping, eating :), and some great personal events. The week following Miss America, I went home to help my piano students compete in the Minnesota Music Teacher’s Association Competition. I obviously was not available to teach them during my time at Miss America, so I was beyond proud with how each and every one of them performed. Almost all of my students won and will be competing at the state level in March! I enjoy teaching piano so much and I have so appreciated how flexible my piano families have been with my Miss Minnesota schedule. We have even done some lessons over Skype, which is pretty cool!

We also have had some exciting additions to our family! I became an Aunt to my sister Kim’s new baby twins! They were born two days after I came back from Miss America so I tell Kim it was nice of her to wait for me to get back to have them! ;) They are two perfect blessings, a boy, Liam Jon, and a girl, Olivia Katheryne (Kim asked me to be her Godmother…how exciting!). I have been spending a lot of time being Auntie the past few weeks and it has been wonderful.

Of course, it hasn’t been all fun and no work! Last week I was interviewed by Fox News for a Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals commercial that will be featured during the Super Bowl. I know a lot of people love watching the commercials during Super Bowl Sunday, so now you get to watch for me (though I don’t know how much of our interview they will be using…just a disclaimer in case it’s a quick second!)!

I am excited to be back in pageant mode this weekend at the Miss Coon Rapids Pageant! (I can’t believe there are only two more pageants left and then Miss Minnesota will be here…but, I don’t want to think about that yet!) For those competing in our final two local pageants, remember to enjoy the journey as much as you would your preferred destination. If I have learned anything from pageants it is that you have no control over the outcome! You just have to present the best YOU so no matter what happens you know you didn't compromise or change the core of who you are. Just have fun and know you will grow each time you compete, win or lose! Some of my best friends are from pageants so take advantage of the fact you are surrounded by women who are just as talented, intelligent, and driven as you are! I am rooting for you all!

My Miss America Journey - Post Event

I just returned home from Miss America last night ready to take on the next 6 months…it’s amazing what a really great night of sleep can do for a person! I am so happy to come back home and still have my job as Miss Minnesota.

Taking in the experience as a whole, I literally left feeling so exhausted--mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. In an effort to always be real and open with who I am and how I feel, I want to take this opportunity to speak from my heart and share my honest feelings. In short, I feel very disappointed. How could I not? I think the hardest part of the whole experience is not that I didn’t win, but that this dream I have spent years working for is now over! That was my very last pageant competition, which is so hard to believe. I felt confident about my ability to be a contender competing on national television, but God clearly had different plans for me. Though I don’t understand fully right now, I have complete faith I will at some point so I just need to be open to every experience and see what I can learn from it. One of the other difficult emotions I am experiencing is this feeling that I let down those who have supported me 100%. Fortunately, I know I did the best I could, and I do not regret anything, but it is admittedly hard to shake some of the sad feelings!

But, I can’t even begin to express what a great all around experience I had at Miss America. I am at home in my apartment and I keep asking myself “Did I really just compete in Miss America?!” It came and went in a blink of an eye, but I have returned from this experience with new friends and much more. I am more than ready to continue working hard as Miss Minnesota, planning new Night of Inspiration Concerts, and continuing to raise money for such a wonderful organization, The Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. My year is far from over, so I hope you don’t mind having me back! I look forward to what the rest of this year and my life holds.

I truly cannot thank you all enough for the many messages, cards, emails, prayers and thoughts! I felt a little bit spoiled for every time I went to my computer I had about 100 new facebook messages! This journey has been incredible and it wouldn’t have been without you. Thank you for allowing me to represent you the best I could; I am sorry the outcome was not what we hoped for! However, on a great note, I was really happy to find out that I received the non-finalist talent award as well as a new award for the highest scoring instrumentalist. Those awards mean so much knowing that my talent was recognized at Miss America. I am also honored that I was a quality of life finalist and, I believe, the third highest fundraiser for CMN. I have left this experience as a winner regardless of not receiving the crown I initially sought. Ultimately, I strive to hold the crown of our heavenly father and do his will…even if it doesn’t always match up with my own.

My Miss America Journey - Day 9, Part 2

This is my final blog at Miss America! I cannot believe tomorrow is the final night of competition and my last day at the Miss America Pageant! I also can’t believe it will be my last and final pageant competition. I wouldn’t want it any other way. It really is the best year to be competing for Miss America because of the 90th anniversary. I have been able to meet so many former Miss Americas and it makes me wish all the more to be a part of that sisterhood. I have no idea who the judges are going to pick for their top 11 or who America will pick for their top 4 so tomorrow’s show is going to be so suspenseful! We had rehearsals all day today and it really is going to be an entertaining night. I expect all of you to have a Miss America Party to watch the show on ABC!

Tonight was such a nice evening at the Night of Dreams Event. I was able to just enjoy my family and relax a little bit! Forty-eight of the 65 living Miss Americas were a part of the event!!

I am going into tomorrow night with a completely open mind. I have envisioned myself winning Miss America and the possibility of not placing at all. Either way, I know I will be leaving here with no regrets and a huge appreciation for my state, my friends, family, and supporters, and for this Organization. Oh, and leaving with lots of new friends! We have been told by the stage crew and hostesses that we are one of the best group of contestants they have had. Honestly, there is no drama or cattiness. All of us are experiencing this together and have truly gotten along so well!
I ask for you to again keep me in your prayers tomorrow… and I promise I will rock the stage and do my best! I love you all so much! Your support and good wishes have meant so much to me and have kept me going on these strenuous days!

My Miss America Journey - Day 8

Tonight was so much fun; the audience was much larger so the energy was pretty incredible! Competing in swimsuit and evening gown was a blast!!! I just love my evening gown; it definitely makes me feel like Miss America! :)

I am part of the Alpha group, which I must say is so talented, fit, and beautiful--inside and out. We spend a lot of time with our group members so it’s great that we all get a long so well! We are already talking about our reunions! :) Honestly, no matter what happens with this whole experience I will be leaving with some great friends…plus, now I can say I know someone in every state!

Rehearsals have begun for Saturday's show on ABC and it’s going to be great! Before tonight’s competition we went on Planet Hollywood’s roof to film the opening part of the show. I wish I could have had my camera to show you the view. It was the most incredible view, but so windy and cold in our fun opening number dresses!

Now tomorrow is going to be a great day for blogging! We are doing the "Show Us Your Shoes" DSW shoe parade at noon and a CMN fundraising gala in the evening. Plus, the press conference for the Quality of Life award is tomorrow…any one of the 8 finalists would be worthy of this award. It has been so wonderful to share the platform work we have done with one another; I love being around such driven, intelligent, and passionate women who make a difference in the lives of others and will continue to do so when this year is over.

It really is hard to believe that I only have two days left here. It feels like I have been here for weeks, yet at the same time it has flown by. The days are so busy that we joke, "did we do that yesterday or today!?" The days start to mesh together so it's nice to write down some of the events we are doing and share them with you!

I have to say I have the BEST cheering crowd at Miss America… and incredible support from those who can't be here as well; I feel you all in spirit! And I just LOVE the visitation time; it is one of my favorite times of the night. After the craziness of competing, being around those who love me and support me unconditionally is such a wonderful feeling!

My Miss America Journey - Day 7

Today I had my interview with three former Miss Americas for the Quality of Life interview; all of them were stunningly beautiful and even more so in person. I wish it had been longer than only 8 minutes, but I will definitely cherish that memory forever. I had the opportunity to share about all the work I have done with my Night of Inspiration concerts, the stories of people who have been recognized, my website, and so much more. To even be a finalist for the Quality of Life Award among this elite group is such an honor.

Tonight I competed in onstage question, which presents a really different night. While all of the other contestants are busy changing into swimsuits, evening gowns, and prepping for talent, the contestants in our group basically had the opportunity to “relax” backstage in the tent…except our minds are busy thinking of all the questions they could possibly ask. I felt good about my response being able to have a comfortable conversation with the host, Reggie. Now, I have tomorrow to look forward to when I will get to strut my stuff in swimsuit and evening gown!

Speaking of tomorrow night, we are now 7 days into the journey and half way through the competition. Kirsten Haglund, Miss America 2008, made a statement tonight that was right on point, “the person who wins is the last person standing (literally).” This is an incredible journey…absolutely positively one of the most riveting experiences of my life and I’m sure my fellow competitors feel the same. Nonetheless, we would all be lying if we said it wasn’t also one of the greatest physical, mental, and emotional challenges of our lives just as Kirsten suggested. I feel so blessed for all of the prayers and support I have received to help me be as strong as possible allowing me to continually do my best. Keep the prayers coming…I know it is what I will need to sustain me in the final days of this journey!

My Miss America Journey - Day 6

WOW! Competing on the Miss America stage is more incredible than I ever imagined! I felt no nerves tonight, just pure excitement!

I felt really good about my piano performance (though it is hard to remember because it all seems to be a blur), but all in all it was just plain fun and exciting. I sure hope I get a chance to do it again on Saturday night!

I must say that the best part of today was seeing my family and friends afterwards at visitation. It’s so funny because I just saw them a week ago, but when you are in this semi-secluded world you develop even greater appreciation for those who love you. You don’t get to talk to family or friends much at all so you feel as if you have been cut off from the real world for a week!

This evening’s preliminary winners were Miss Hawaii for lifestyle and fitness and Miss North Carolina for talent. Her contemporary clogging dance was extremely entertaining and Miss Hawaii is, of course, beautiful! Both awards were very well deserved.

As the week continues, it just gets more and more exciting and fun. Tomorrow I will have my Quality of Life interview, and guess who is interviewing me? None other than Katie Stam (one of my role models!), Kellye Cash, and Ericka Dunlap. I can’t tell you how much I am looking forward to this! This interview will take place at 9am (Wednesday), so please continue to keep me in your prayers.

My Miss America Journey - Day 5

Today was my interview! I was quite proud of myself because I got up at 5:30 AM to work out before meeting with the group for our 7:40 rehearsal. The only time we have to work out (outside of just doing some crunches in the room) is at 6-7am on certain days. Today, I knew a good workout would help clear my head and release any tension. I felt very calm (with a few butterflies accompanying me) before my interview. I knew so many people were praying for me and sending good vibes my way so I felt at peace knowing I could just leave it in God’s hands. Prior to the interview, I had a certain expectation of how it was going to go (just like so many of us who try to micro manage and plan everything ☺), and guess what…it was unlike any interview I have ever had! Crazy how that works, but what a gift it was to be able to be real, open, vulnerable, and totally in the moment with the judges. The interview flew by so fast so it felt like one second I was walking in and the very next second it was over and I was out! I believe I did very well, but it’s so hard to know what the judges think (especially when they have to listen to 52 other interviews!)…ultimately, however, I’m glad I was able to just speak from my heart. If they choose me, what an honor; but, if they don’t, at least it’s not because I wasn’t Kathryn. So now… it’s time to move on and focus on the stage competitions…I can’t wait.

After rehearsing the rest of the day, we had a great dinner at P.F. Changs. BeBe Shopp Waring (a former Miss Minnesota who became Miss America!) and Heather French Henry (my favorite Miss America) were two of the people who gave very touching speeches. Bebe, who is now 80, looks so young and is still so gracious and graceful. Each spoke with such kindness and sincerity. I think all of us felt at peace afterwards; I know I did. From their perspective, whomever wins will need all the rest of us to love and support her because the job of Miss America is incredibly difficult; I LOVE that philosophy. As Miss America, you don't live anywhere other than hotel rooms. You truly are on call 24 hours a day and some days you are so tired that you could question your ability to make it through the next day. But knowing the huge privilege and responsibility Miss America is granted, knowing the people who love and support us, and seeing the difference we can make with our platforms and the Children's Miracle Network, makes it all worthwhile! And, the final thing they said that was so special and personal to me was how this amazing experience is just preparing us for the other future plans God has for us. Even though 52 contenders will not realize the dream of becoming Miss America, we all need to trust that this is still a part of the bigger plan in our life. I have believed this from the beginning, but to hear it from former Miss Americas who spoke so eloquently was really special.

It really is starting to get exciting and I might just add that families and directors are everywhere…it is pictures galore anywhere and everywhere we go! (I know I’m using the word “exciting” a lot, but really that is the true emotion of what I am experiencing!) How surprising it must be for passer-bys to see 53 sparkly crowns and banners on 53 beautiful young women!

After dinner, we got to have a “private shopping party” of Miss America merchandise, and guess what, like a typical girl, I wanted everything!! I did purchase a few things for my family (and for myself of course ☺) so it was a great night!

Tomorrow is my talent rehearsal and night 1 of preliminaries. I don’t know how much I will be able to blog, but I will continue to try my best (so just forgive me if it’s a little late in being posted)! Being here at Miss America is truly surreal. I can imagine how my heart will be pumping right before the opening number and before my talent. Regardless of what happens in the finals, I am so incredibly pumped to be able to perform my own original piano composition on the biggest stage and in front of the biggest audience ever! This is a dream come true and I plan to savor it.

There are only 2 more days left to vote for your favorite contestant, so please keep pushing to have people vote for me! Four contestants are chosen from those votes so that is a big deal! Again, I can’t thank you enough for your love, support, encouragement, thoughts and prayers. I am very blessed!

My Miss America Journey - Day 4

I don’t know if it was all of your prayers, my prayers, or a combination of both, but today the opening number went much better for me--whew! I think I almost have it (just in time)! After another long day of rehearsals we are all starting to feel more comfortable with the walking patterns and the dance.

Some of the contestants had their interviews tonight, but prior to the start we were all brought into the theatre (which looks so incredible by the way!) to meet the judges. Seeing them in person took away some of my nerves and reminded me that they are real people! They were so encouraging and had great words of advice even saying, “be real because they will spot the phoneys!” I hate to break it to them, but there are truly none in this group of Miss America contestants. I have never met a more real and beautiful-inside and out- bunch of young women. I do not envy their job in making a selection amongst this fine group, but I do pray they see the real me and appreciate it!

I also have been very blessed to remain healthy outside of just feeling tired. Many of the ladies are getting really sick and I am praying I will miss out on that! Please say some prayers for my fellow competitors…we all know how hard it can be to be at our best when feeling under the weather. Competitors or not, I want each of these ladies to be able to make the most of this once in a lifetime experience.

Tonight was a beautiful night at the Eifel Tower in the Paris Hotel! The view was stunning! See for yourself!

I can’t imagine the view from the real Eiffel Tower. We were up about 500 feet, which is only half of the real Eiffel Tower, 1,063 ft!

Can you believe I am already in my room and it is not even 10pm?! This is the perfect night for me to take advantage of a good night’s rest to prepare physically, mentally, and emotionally for the days ahead including my interview, which will take place 12 hours from now!! After years worth of preparation, the moment has finally arrived; it's quite surreal! I know God has prepared me for this moment and I will continue to put my full trust in Him knowing His plans for me are nothing short of perfect. Keep sending the prayers!

My Miss America Journey - Day 3

I can’t believe it was only three days ago I checked in! With long days and great interactions with the other contestants, it feels like I have been here so much longer!

Yesterday, I mentioned that the opening number is hard. So today, after another full day of rehearsals, I ask the question (again) to my mother, “Why didn’t you put me in dance lessons!?” Ha ha…I am having such a hard time with the opening number, but I know I will get it and honestly it is going to be so cool! Our entire day was spent rehearsing, with breaks only to eat or do personal video interviews, but that also meant I could have a 5 minute practice on the piano! It felt so wonderful to be in the zone with my fingers after trying to get my feet to enter a zone they are not quite accustomed to during production number rehearsals! :)

This evening we were in a fashion show featuring an outfit from Joseph Ribkoff for us to wear in our own style. I have never been in a fashion show where the stage comes up from under the ground and has a really long runway; it was so cool! Afterwards, we signed so many autographs and met a lot of people who were visiting from all over the country. Then, we were off to one of my favorite restaurants, Bucca di Beppo (I love pasta!)! We eat at Bucca every year during Miss Minnesota week so it brought back those fond memories…especially when they brought out the huge brownie/ice cream dessert!

Tomorrow marks the beginning of competition for some contestants. The judges arrive and some of the contestants will have their interviews tomorrow night. It really is starting to sink in! My interview will take place on Monday morning at 10:50 so please say a lot of prayers around that time! I can’t thank you all enough for your encouraging messages! It truly is an honor to be a part of this experience and to know I have so many people rooting for me means so much!

One final note to bring recognition to a special young woman back in Minnesota…congratulations to the newly crowned Miss North Shore 2011, Caitlyn Thompson!

My Miss America Journey: Day Two

Hello Everyone!

This morning could not have started any better…in honor of the 90th anniversary of Miss America (and Elvis’s birthday) IHOP came to our hotel so we could flip pancakes AND enjoy a wonderful breakfast featuring a 90th anniversary pancake cake! This event also presented the opportunity for us to meet a 12 year old girl and 17 year old boy from a CMN hospital here in Nevada reminding us about the greatness of this organization as it supports the Children’s Miracle Network.

While I wasn’t very good at flipping pancakes at first, I must say I did quite well if I do say so myself…once I got the hang of it! After a big breakfast full of carbs and sugar (gotta love it!), we were off to a busy day of rehearsals.

Can I just say the opening number is going to be so sweet?! It is by far the most difficult dance I have ever had to do! I don’t want to spoil it by revealing the song, but I will say it is upbeat, a ton of fun, and makes you want to dance! I just hope I can learn it in time to not make a fool of myself on national television!! We also learned our walking patterns for evening gown and swimsuit from some amazing choreographers. They have a fun spirit so it has been awesome to work with them.
In the middle of rehearsals, half of the contestants (including me) were pulled to shoot short video clips for America to see if we make the top 15. We were also interviewed by Artistry by Amway who is underwriting all of the scholarships for this year’s Miss America contestants!

After a fun but exhausting day of rehearsals, we got to wind down and enjoy the Barry Manilow show…wow, can he sing! It was such an enjoyable night; I just wished my parents had been there to watch because I know they really would have enjoyed him!

On a more personal note, can I just say I love the beds here in Planet Hollywood?! :) They are so comfortable, big and inviting! Looking forward to sharing my day with you tomorrow! Thanks for reading!

My Miss America Journey: DAY 1

After bidding my family farewell on Wednesday and departing for Vegas to arrive one day ahead of schedule to get a good night’s rest, I was ready for the action that our first day would bring. (By the way, many thanks to Sun Country Airlines for sponsoring my luggage transportation, which totaled 6 suitcases, a carry-on, and a purse!!) We started the day with fittings and checking in to our hotel room where I met my awesome roommate, Miss California. With many similarities and personalities that really compliment each other, I feel so blessed to spend the next 10 days with her!

Next, we were off to the opening ceremony where we were introduced by Boys II Men; this definitely had my adrenaline going! They also announced the Quality of Life finalists, and I am so honored to be one of them! The Quality of Life Awards were introduced in 1988 to recognize contestants who excel in their commitment to community service. To be considered for this award, contestants must submit an application answering 5 questions to describe their involvement with Children's Miracle Network, the national platform of the Miss America Organization, and their own personal platform issue. From the eight finalists, three will be chosen to receive additional scholarships after we all go through a separate interview in just a few days—winners are announced on Friday, January 14th. This award means so much to me, so I can’t tell you how happy I was to be named a finalist.

After the opening ceremony, we hopped on our buses for a DSW television commercial. DSW is presenting the 2011 Miss America Pageant and also sponsoring a great shoe parade that will take place later in the week!

At last, it was time to eat; I was starving! After salad and pizza, we enjoyed some birthday cake in honor of Miss Iowa’s and Miss Oklahoma’s birthdays!

This whole day was so incredible. It finally sunk in that one of the contestants in that room is going to be the next Miss America. It could be anyone; it could be me! What an exciting feeling to experience my dreams coming true and to see how truly outstanding this organization is. Can you believe that this year’s contestants alone have raised $1.4 million for Children’s Miracle Network?! How invigorating it is to know we really are making a difference! I am also so excited for this 90th Anniversary of Miss America as the most former Miss America’s are returning than ever before! I have the great pleasure of meeting them all on Friday night at the gala; I cannot wait!

Well, it’s about time for me to turn in for the night considering it is already 12:44 am and I need to be awake by 5am (I can already tell it is going to be an exhausting 10 days, but I’m ready for it!). Before I go though, I just want to say that this really is an outstanding group of genuine and sweet women. I have a feeling this is going to be a great group and a life changing experience.

Oh, and one more practical point for anyone heading to Vegas…it’s chilly at night so don’t forget a jacket!!

"I'm Leavin' On A Jet Plane..."

Hello everyone!

I cannot believe this moment is finally here! I am leaving for Las Vegas today for the Miss America Pageant! These past few weeks have been so busy with more appearances, two sendoffs (gown showings), and a lot of last minute shopping to make everything ready to pack! I am quite proud of myself as I was able to condense about 9 suitcases down to 5 and a carryon--you wouldn't believe all the clothes, shoes, jewelry, gowns, blister Band-Aids, makeup, and so much more that I had to pack!!

I am so unbelievably excited to leave today! I am going into this competition with such peace and an open heart and mind to be God's servant. I pray that my heart is constantly evident to the other contestants and the judges so they can see the real Kathryn…someone who, of course, wants to be Miss America (very badly!) but who also ultimately knows that God already knows who Miss America will be. He already knows what questions the judges are going to ask me and the friends I will make there, and that is what brings me great peace. I don't need to worry, but only savor in this dream of mine for the next 10 days!

I want to thank each and every one of you from the bottom of my heart. I am so overwhelmed with your encouraging messages, thoughts, and prayers for me in this journey. If anything, I think I will be the most prayed for contestant and that should be worth something! :) I hope you all know how much you mean to me. Being Miss Minnesota thus far has been a dream come true filled with so many beautiful moments that I will never forget. I would be honored to come back and continue working hard to represent you; however…if my other dream of becoming Miss America comes true, well, let's celebrate!

Please continue to keep me in your thoughts and prayers. I am hoping that exhaustion won’t keep me from writing blogs each day to provide updates on what’s happening so you have an insider’s view of Miss America.

In the Christmas Spirit

Hello Friends!

As Christmas time is approaching I have absolutely loved how I have been able to play Christmas music at most of my appearances, which really puts me in the spirit! I cannot believe how fast the time is flying before Miss America; it definitely feels like there are not enough hours in the day to fit in everything!! Nonetheless, I have been blessed to participate in many great appearances including some of the highlights below starting in the City of…

Faribault
I began the morning at Bethlehem Academy, my mother’s high school alma mater, speaking to over 300 students from 7th-12th grade. From there, I went to the Faribault Rotary to perform and speak about my platform and how it ties in so well with the Children’s Miracle Network. After sharing stories about families who have overcome adversity, I had a great conversation with a member from the rotary about people who have inspired them. It really made the afternoon so meaningful. However, to top off the day, I was able to spend it with my grandparents, who I don’t see often enough, at their assisted living facility where everyone joined together to throw a party for me! Check out the beautiful cake they had made for me. It says, "Welcome Kathryn Knuttila, Miss Minnesota!" They let me perform and speak for over an hour. Plus, they asked some great questions, which always helps for interview preparation! It was an awesome day!

On to the City of…

Frazee
The very next day I drove up to Frazee where I was the honorary guest for a Christmas Gala! It was the most beautiful night! They had decorated the Event Center so attractively with lights and trees, and they even built a stage for the grand piano they rented! I put on a concert for everyone and invited some inspiring talent to join me, so it was similar to my Night of Inspiration Concerts. This time, however, the concert served as a fundraiser for Sacred Heart Catholic Church where I am still the music director. Being close to home in so many ways from the physical location to the people attending, this event was so moving for me. I sold over 60 cds that night and had people offer wonderful words of support and encouragement! I am truly blessed to have such supportive people in my life who really believe in me! Now, to the City of…

Detroit Lakes
The next night I had a similar event at Holy Rosary Church where I gave another concert and spoke about my platform. Once again, I was overwhelmed by the support, which comes at a perfect time with the Miss America just a few weeks away. The church members prayed a blessing over me to allow my heart and mind to be at complete peace while I am at Miss America. This was such a great reminder for me that when I am on that stage and in the interview, I am there for them…it is not about me; it’s about all of these wonderful people who believe I can be a fantastic Miss America. If I start to feel nervous or overwhelmed, I just need to close my eyes and remember all of the people rooting for me…a sure recipe to push me to persevere! Next up, the City of…

Maplewood
Yet another fun Christmas Gala night! This event presented a new audience of people for me, which means I had the opportunity to educate on how awesome the Miss America Organization is! Lately, I have been able to showcase the unique aspect of MAO through the talent portion by sharing my gifts and talents at all these events! At last, we’re back to the City of…

St. Paul

I had two other really fun events this past week. One was selling cds in the St. Paul Skyway in front of ProActive Chiropractic, my new favorite place, where I have been getting help to realign my back! They have been so gracious to fit me in any time I stop by so they offered to have an event for me where I sold cds and did a meet and greet with people walking by. The other event was a Christmas Party at a beautiful home of a gracious host. She invited me to be the guest performer to entertain her guests and I had an opportunity to again share about my platform, CMN, and what the job of Miss Minnesota entails. I love the positive feedback that everyone gives when they understand what Miss America offers young women and they can see the benefits through me!

After all of these great Christmas events, I am ready to have some good old Christmas joy with my own family who I am heading to see in just a couple of days. But, before I go…I have to give you the update on my CD sales because I have some exciting news!! With the deadline for the Children's Miracle Network fundraiser fast approaching (December 30th!), I have made a big push for cd sales this month, and….drum roll please…I have sold out!! This means I have raised $10,000 for CMN in CD sales alone (which doesn’t include all of the donations that have come in through the concerts and other generous donors)!! Now, if you haven’t purchased your CD yet, not to worry…a new order has been placed!! Many thanks to everyone who has bought a CD! I hope it has brought you much joy and peace when you listen to it!

Well that was a lot to share in only two weeks time! And, now Christmas is just days away with my sendoff parties following right after! What a great season this is! Happy Holidays to you and I hope you will be able to enjoy them with family!

One Month to Go!

It has been a while since I last blogged! I can’t quite believe I leave for Miss America in one month! I have dreamt about the possibility of competing for Miss America ever since I can remember, but now that it is becoming a reality; it’s hard to believe!

I have had some great appearances during the past week or two, but the majority of my time (as you can imagine with Miss America being only a month away!) has been spent preparing for Miss America with mock interviews, performances, practices with talent and walk, fittings, shopping, and the list goes on. It’s amazing to think how much goes into 14 days at Miss America! One of the ways I have found most beneficial in preparing is to seek as many “real” opportunities as possible…everything from talent, to community service, to speaking…the more my skills are tested in the public, the more confident and comfortable I become. This has been something I have practiced and learned to be true over four years of competing, so if you’re a competitor looking to improve don’t be shy about seeking opportunities for yourself.

Speaking of opportunities, I recently performed the National Anthem for the Women’s Gopher Game. I had a lot of fun writing my own arrangement of the National Anthem, and hope I can do it again! It’s not often that the National Anthem is just played on piano with no vocal accompaniment, but it sounded really cool!

I also had the opportunity to improve my bowling skills…not that this will help me for Miss America, but it might come in handy some day! For those who know me, you know I am not the best bowler whatsoever! But, this Sunday presented the chance to be a part of the Bowlathon Fundraiser for Gillette where I was honored to be a part of Team Davis. Emily Davis was an inspiring American we recognized at the Maplewood Night of Inspiration Concert. is an incredible trouper and her family is not only so supportive of her, but also a lot of fun! Lucky for me, Emily must have sent a little luck my way because I bowled a 132! (Now remember, for me that is really good so no making fun if that seems low! We all have our own gifts!) With over 20 teams participating in the event, I know it was a success for Gillette and a very fun night for us all!

I also put my stage skills to test at the “Night of Inspiration” concert in Coon Rapids this past Saturday night. As always, we left inspired by individuals who have overcome such adversity with the most positive attitudes. I am so thankful for those who took the time to nominate the individuals who have made a difference in their life so more people can be positively impacted by these inspirational men and women. The stories will be posted on whohasinspiredyou.com very soon, which I am working on updating it, so check it out to read some of the inspiring stories that will be posted soon! We also highlighted talent from a previous Miss Coon Rapids and Miss Minnesota as well as some local talent. I must say, I think we found a future Miss Minnesota—she is an 11 year old dancer, Miranda, who impressed us all with her technique and grace! It is so much fun to witness all the incredible talent and humbling stories of the people of Minnesota!

It’s hard to believe but this was the last pre-Miss America concert!! If I am honored with the job of Miss America, I look forward to continuing the Community Concert tour across our great Nation, but if I return as Miss Minnesota, no doubt we will continue the tour across our great state of MN!

Although the concerts are on hold for awhile now, the website nominations are not! We are still looking for your Inspiring American’s story! Revelations

From Friday at noon through late this Sunday evening, my weekend as Miss Minnesota was jam-packed with events—literally every minute when you include the travel time—but unlike other blogs I have shared, this blog is not going to be filled with all of the fine details from my events at the Muscular Dystrophy walk, the Miss Mankato pageant, and the Night of Inspiration in St. Peters, MN. Rather, I am going to take this opportunity to bear my soul to give you a greater understanding of the woman I am today as a result of past adversity. This weekend, I performed and spoke at Compelled: The Road Less Traveled, a retreat to inspire youth to pursue excellence and the path of righteousness. It was in this venue, filled with talented musicians and encouraging testimonies, that I revealed the depths of my inner most struggles and the strength that has carried me through to minister to many young people so they could experience their own revelation. Upon leaving this event, where I left more changed than I ever thought possible, I now feel ready to share my heart with you. While I have shared my personal testimony at a purity retreat prior to becoming Miss Minnesota and in several high schools, I have not shared my story with many individuals who I personally know. I guess I am finding that it takes more courage to speak face to face about this with people who I know really love and care about me than it does to share in a larger group setting where I can use my experience to inspire youth to be strong even in the midst of life’s most difficult moments. I know I certainly could have used someone being raw and real with me three years ago when I hit rock bottom.

I will begin by saying I am blessed…I always have been. With a family who has done nothing but support me to the utmost and beautiful gifts that God has bestowed on me, I really feel blessed. But there was a time in my life where I didn’t feel as blessed, though I can now reflect back on that period and know that everything happens for a reason and out of the worst the best can arise. That dark moment in life came three years ago when I was a victim of rape. This adversity dealt me a significant blow that I can’t even begin to describe. After this happened, I admittedly fell into a more destructive path having no self-worth or value and feeling completely used like a disgusting piece of trash. Fear prevented me from initially telling anyone, but I mustered the courage to tell my sister Kari who helped me tell my parents. If I hadn’t told her when I did, I can’t even imagine where I would be today. I may have never told anyone, which likely would have caused this secret to eat away at me and perhaps even lead me further down the path that so many youth find themselves on today-the path of self-destruction and regret. Instead, with an unshakable faith and immense love and support from my family and counseling, I slowly started to put my life back together and heal. But, it wasn’t until I dove in heart first with my platform where I was meeting inspiring people who had been nominated on whohasinspiredyou.com that I began to realize the blessing that could come from this horrible dark point in my life. After listening to story after story of seemingly awful situations, I realized that some of the most amazing people have gone through the worst of the worst but their strength and attitudes in overcoming their tragedy or adversity has allowed them to be so inspiring. These are the individuals, the real heroes among us, that allow others who are experiencing similar situations to begin to realize a sense of peace knowing that a light does exist at the end of some of the darkest tunnels--“If that person can get through it, I can too.”
I know that God does not want bad things to happen to us, but He allows them so we can grow closer to him and to use those situations for good- to be a light in the world and to those He has placed in our paths. Thus, it became clear to me that Inspiring America is what I must do with my life. This is MY experience…not an experience that I asked for, not an experience I would wish upon my worst enemy, but it is now mine, and it is my responsibility to use it to create hope and peace.
I have healed my pain by honoring and sharing the inspiring stories of our unsung heroes across Minnesota, and, almost three years later, I can truly say the Miss America Organization has changed my life. It has provided me this opportunity to use my crown as a symbol of America’s strength. I am stronger than I ever have been and I owe it to so many things: God’s healing grace, my family, my platform and this organization. I was given a great responsibility this year as Miss Minnesota and I am so grateful for this opportunity; I just never realized how much it would touch my heart and change me more on the inside than the outside.

So, that is my revelation. I feel a greater sense of healing even writing this, just as I felt that deeper sense of peace after the youth retreat this weekend. I really hope the students were changed in some small way, but I know that I benefited in a greater way than I bargained for. I left changed…every time I leave an appearance, I am changed, sometimes in small ways and sometimes in big ways…thank you, Miss America, for providing constant opportunities for change. If you are a contestant in this organization, buckle your seat belt because if you really go after it, you stand to gain so much more than just a crown. You stand to gain the greatest sense of fulfillment, peace, and beautiful revelations in life day after day. My advice, take the risks…be courageous in sharing who you are, be raw, be real…you won’t regret it! This weekend, I felt the Lord by my side starting at the retreat and going all the way through to the Night of Inspiration Concert in St. Peters on Sunday. I am ready to seize every opportunity to share my story and work on my platform to the largest degree possible, whatever that may be.
I encourage you to help me continue this network of inspiration and pay it forward to someone else. Whether that is volunteering, nominate your inspiring person, or just telling them that they inspire you, it is a small way to help us realize all the amazing things that are happening around us every day amidst the negative we see on TV. While at Miss Minnesota in June, I remember hearing about a tornado that had devastated the city of Wadena, MN. Being that I pass through Wadena every time I travel home to Detroit Lakes, I am quite familiar with the city’s landscape and can certainly attest to the fact that this tornado caused irreversible changes to the aesthetics of the town. But, the amazing thing is that this same irreversible change did not happen to the hearts of the Wadena citizens; in fact, I think it caused their hearts to grow larger. In these times of strife, the town has come together with remarkable strength to volunteer time to clean up debris while bringing the community back to some sense of normalcy. So, I was honored to do my part by hosting a Night of Inspiration Concert right there in Wadena this past Saturday to celebrate all of the good that is happening there. The concert took place at the Memorial Auditorium, which has the most stunning 9 foot Steinway grand piano…as you can probably imagine, this was a dream for me to play on and certainly for the other gifted piano players who shared their talent that evening! A 12 year old boy named Joey played Beethoven’s 3rd movement of the Moonlight Sonata. To give you an idea of how gifted this young man is, this was a piece I played when I was 16! Another Inspiring American named Irma Allen (who is over 90 years old!!) has taught piano for 70 YEARS inspiring students to love music. Irma performed at the concert and the piece she selected was the same one she played 71 years ago on the very same stage for her senior piano recital…all I can say is, WOW! It was such an enjoyable night, but also a night to remember that, in the words of Mayor Wayne Wolden, “in times of great despair there are many reasons to be thankful and to have hope.” What an honor it was to recognize Mayor Wolden as an Inspiring American for all the work he did to bring back the city after the tornado. Despite all of the turmoil the residents of this town have faced, I felt honored that over $800 was given to benefit the Children’s Miracle Network that night. The people of Wadena are truly a shining example of how life’s adversity has the power to create strength, connectedness, and an immense desire to serve and bless others in need. True to course, I left another concert being inspired and blessed beyond measure!

In addition to the concert, the last couple of weeks have also been filled with school visits, talent performances, fundraisers, and other cool events. Have I mentioned before how much I LOVE being Miss Minnesota!!

My school visit took me to Hudson High School (this is an appearance I have done every year I have served as a titleholder) where my sister, Kari, is a choir teacher. It is the students there who inspire me to come back year after year because of their heart and commitment to music. It is also such a thrill to see my sister, who served as Miss Minnesota 2001, live out her platform of music education every day as their director. It just goes to show how remarkable and life impacting the Miss America Organization is! The personal platform component of the Miss America Organization has defined the long-term career and service path that so many young women have taken in life over the past 20 years. And now, you add the incredible commitment that women around our nation are showing to the national partnership of the Children’s Miracle Network--as much as we’re helping to change lives through the money we diligently work to raise for CMN, our lives are being transformed as we develop a deeper and stronger commitment to service.

It has been an absolute joy for me to work tirelessly to raise money for CMN through every Inspiring America event, and I had another great experience in Perham putting on a fundraiser dinner/performance at their golf club. Over the course of four hours, I performed, presented and socialized with over 180 guests. Can you believe I sold 50“Blessed Beyond Measure” CD’s that night? By the end of the night, we had raised more than $500 for CMN! Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of the generous people across Minnesota who have given to this worthy cause!! I continue to be humbled by the generosity of the people of Minnesota!

Speaking of being humbled, every time I do an event for Gillette Children’s Hospital I walk away changed. The most recent event I participated in was a fundraiser called “Shop and Sip” at CSM in Minneapolis. My duties were simple, meet and greet people and draw raffle winners, but these fun appearances are so awesome because they showcase the great support people have for Gillette. (And, it certainly doesn’t hurt when their donated money for CMN goes towards raffle tickets for great drawings and prizes!)

During my first four and a half months of service, I have traveled from one end of the state to the other and one side to the other. With one-third of my reign over, I have learned from every appearance and every person I have met that life is too short to not give…to give of ourselves in whatever way God has blessed us with, be it our talents, our time, or our money. I recently had the great opportunity to be a part of a promotional video for “Give to the Max Day,” which will occur on November 16th (the video will be forthcoming). This day presents the perfect opportunity for each one of us to take part in the Nation’s largest giving day blessing hundreds of charities. I encourage you to go to givemn.org on November 16th and donate to your favorite charity. Even by donating a simple $10 you can be a part of this great day that has already raised over $19,000,000 for charities! And, if you can’t give monetarily, create your own version of “Give to the Max Day” by volunteering your time to one of the many organizations in need. With the holiday season fast approaching, this is our opportunity to look for even more opportunities to inspire and bless those around us. You just never know how monumental of an impact your small sacrifice can have.

Miss America is less than three months away! The days are flying by and have been filled with appearances, workouts, practicing piano and much more Miss America prep. In addition to preparing for Miss America, I have continued to keep busy with several appearances across the state.

Congratulations to Aja Majkrzak and Lauren Johnson who were just crowned Miss Capital City and Miss Twin Cities. I had the great honor of giving my farewell to the local title of Miss Twin Cities that I proudly represented prior to becoming Miss Minnesota, and also crowned the new titleholder. I reflect back to where I was a year ago…preparing for Miss Twin Cities without knowing that one year from then I would be preparing for the job of Miss America. I am so excited I can hardly stand it! Thank you so much to Kathy Shellum and Judy Register for being such wonderful directors by not only encouraging me, but also pushing me out of my comfort zone so that I would be prepared for this once in a lifetime job. You two will forever be my friends!

Prior to the pageant, I teamed up with the organization “Cheerful Givers” for the National Make a Difference Day. The mission of “Cheerful Givers” is to provide toy-filled birthday bags to food shelves and homeless shelters so that parents living in poverty can give their child a birthday gift. In one hour, we bagged over 1,900 birthday bags to provide for families in need. As I participated in this event, I couldn’t help but feel so blessed for the life I have been provided and to feel encouraged by the smile these gifts will provide to a child. What a humbling experience. Volunteering with this organization only takes an hour or two of your time, but can make the world of a difference to a child. On October 15th, I had another Night of Inspiration Concert in Cambridge, MN at “In His Steps Ballet Studio.” This was a unique night of talent with the dance students from the studio performing to my piano music! This was also a great night with more inspiring stories. I’d love to take a moment to share the story of Grace, who was the Gillette patient we recognized as an Inspiring American.

Grace was born 16 weeks early weighing barely a pound. Like many premature infants, she has cerebral palsy – a form of brain damage that, for Grace, affects her ability to speak. Until two years ago, life without words was 6-year-old Grace’s reality. But, this strong little girl persisted and overcame her major life obstacle. On October 17th, I joined my two friends Kaylah Dockter and Aja Majkrzak in St. Cloud to perform at a benefit concert for a high school’s orchestra program. With budget cuts taking a toll on schools across the country, this St. Cloud School’s orchestral program made the decision to fundraise through numerous concerts. With music being an integral part of my life, I was thrilled to be a part of the concert! I have to say their orchestra was superb, AND, I will be writing a piece for them to perform at a future concert; as you can imagine, with a love for composing music, I am very excited for this task! I would not be who I am today if my parents had not put me in piano lessons at the age of 5. No matter what was going on in my life, I could use music as an escape or even a way to deal with my emotions. I can’t imagine that being taken away from a student so I was honored to help them out!

On the 21st of October, I had a fantastic appearance in Vergas, MN! I was invited to the beautiful home of The McGrady’s who hosted several of their friends for an Evening of Inspiration with Miss Minnesota. They welcomed me as a dinner guest (which was probably the best four course meal I have ever had!), and then I had the opportunity to perform on a beautiful grand piano while also sharing about the Children’s Miracle Network and my platform of Inspiring America.

Their generosity and graciousness was absolutely remarkable. This group of 20 individuals gave over $2,500 in donations to CMN! What a night; I felt so honored that they would so graciously and generously give to this great organization on my behalf! With their help, I have now raised over $10,000 for CMN!!! At this rate, I know I will far exceed my goal of raising $15,000 throughout my year of service as Miss Minnesota, and hopefully as Miss America!

The next two weeks are jam-packed with appearances so I will try to blog a bit sooner to keep you updated! Thank you again for your time and support. I hope that you are inspired to make a difference in your community!

"I am the Queen of the World"

Now, before you jump to the conclusion that I have grown rather conceited over the past four months since becoming Miss Minnesota, please read on as you’ll see the title of this blog is not my words or thoughts…I promise! But, it is a great line so I just had to include it!

Last week, I visited Small Blessings Preschool in Detroit Lakes. I began by reading my favorite book, "The Giving Tree," and then I read their favorite book about a king who wouldn't get out of the bathtub (children’s literature has such interesting premises, but it certainly captures the attention of these little ones!). After storytime, the teacher asked the kids what I was the queen of. They were quick to shout back, "The whole world!" I laughed and gave them a second guess by providing the clue that I am the queen of the state where we live. So they replied with, "Detroit Lakes!" (Considering they are preschoolers and that is the town we were in, that was close enough!) The giggles and awe from that moment transferred to the piano performance I gave as they couldn’t believe how fast my fingers were going. I really enjoyed this appearance because it reminded me of sweet innocence and to not always take myself too seriously. Oh... and that it is also okay to believe that I am the "Queen of the World" for a day! :)

From the simple yet important inspiration provided by the preschoolers to the deep inspiration I receive from my concert tour, it was such an honor to bring the Night of Inspiration Concert into another community. Last week, the Maplewood community hosted a Night of Inspiration at Redeeming Love Church. One of the nominees, Stacie McBride-Cox, is a great friend and mentor of mine. Stacie has not only inspired me throughout the years, but so many others with the strength she has shown in overcoming her sister's tragic murder. She has shaped many young women into confident and well spoken individuals in the Miss America system, and has certainly played a major role in helping me prepare for the job of Miss Minnesota and Miss America.

The concert also showcased other touching stories like Emily, a sweet girl from Gillette Children’s Hospital, who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at 13 months old. Although her speech is affected by her condition, she communicates well, which certainly provided great inspiration for all of us. She is such a trooper! Another story was the Mayer Family who lost all three of their daughters in a car accident as the girls drove to their brother’s wedding. While I am not a parent and thus cannot fully understand or even imagine how that could feel, it hurts my heart to even think about it. All of the unsung heroes recognized at the concert had such powerful stories of strength, which I believe provided life perspective and a blessed feeling. These concerts never cease to amaze me from the constant inspiration I feel to the incredible talent that is showcased providing continued motivation to keep using our God-given gifts. I am so excited for my next Night of Inspiration concert taking place this Friday in Cambridge!

On a short note, I also had the opportunity to speak and perform for the sisters and almuni of the Sigma Alpha Iota Chapter. SAI is a sorority for musicians so I felt very much at home and welcomed as a fellow musician.

Finally, we added another title holder just yesterday who will compete for Miss Minnesota 2011...Miss North Metro, Bethany Beniek! Congratulations to her! She has worked incredibly hard and I know she will represent the North Metro with passion and drive. Congratulations also to Bailey Wachholz, the new North Metro Outstanding Teen! She truly is an outstanding teen who has shown incredible devotion to her platform of Alzheimer’s Awareness! Next up…Miss Twin Cities on Oct. 23rd. This was my local title heading into Miss Minnesota this year. I can't believe how the time has flown by! It is remarkable to think how much has changed since this time last year when I was preparing to compete for Miss Twin Cities. At that time, I could only wish and hope that I would have the opportunity to represent our great state and to compete for Miss America…it is still so surreal to be experiencing that dream!

I hope you are all enjoying this beautiful fall with our summer-like weather! I always love driving to appearances with the beautiful view of colored leaves on trees; it is simply breathtaking. Less than breath-taking, however, is the flu bug that can accompany this season (I just recovered from the flu myself), so stay well this season! I am sending healthy wishes your way!

"A Fall of Inspiration"

This past weekend was a perfect representation of the versatility of my platform with it naturally fitting any event or appearance on my schedule. I have received many nominations lately on
whohasinspiredyou.com of inspiring people, which makes me thrilled! Some were from the 7th graders I recently visited at Detroit Lakes Middle School, and others were from individuals who are eager to have their inspiring American recognized at an upcoming
“Night of Inspiration Concert.” Among the most interesting nominations was for a woman to be recognized at a family birthday party. So, on Saturday, I drove 3 ½ hours into Wisconsin to highlight an Inspiring American named Gloria. It was her uncle’s birthday party, but Gloria’s niece, Jacquie, nominated her and wanted to surprise her while the whole family was there. I think she found it a bit odd when Miss Minnesota showed up in WI to celebrate a birthday, but she was so welcoming anyway! It was great to share my platform while also talking about what being Miss Minnesota entails. As I spoke about the vision of Inspiring America, it was such an honor to share Gloria’s story with the family. By the end we were all in tears because of the incredibly touching moment, so it was time to bring on the entertainment. I brought my keyboard along so I could inspire with some original music; they were a great audience! After leaving, it really sunk in how it doesn’t matter whether I am speaking to hundreds of students, or to a group of Rotary members, or even a family celebrating; my platform can touch the lives of so many and as a result, my own life is touched! I want to also recognize a wonderful young lady, and a great friend of mine, Bethany Beniek! She put on a fantastic CMN fundraising concert in St. Josephs with Tonic Sol Fa and another a capela group called Johnnie Blend. Both groups were awesome! I also had the honor of kicking off the concert with my piano music. Bethany put in months preparing for this concert and found great sponsors to donate wonderful prizes including a complimentary manicure, pedicure and up-do for me before the concert! The concert drew in a great crowd so I know the event was a great success!

Speaking of concerts, I will be hosting another “Night of Inspiration” this coming Saturday, October 2nd, in the Twin Cities suburb of Maplewood at Redeeming Love Church. If you haven’t made one of these concerts, please come to this one! We have some great talent of titleholders in the area as well as dancers and musicians from the community. I had a wonderful birthday on Wednesday that included horseback riding, dinner with friends and some karaoke! I sang, “It’s Raining Men,” one of my favorite classics! From Here to There, I’m Everywhere!

This was a busy week for me so I apologize in advance for this being a long blog!

Let’s start with 6:30am on Tuesday the 14th! On this very early morning, I started my day by serenading the Detroit Lakes Morning Rotary club followed by giving a presentation. This group was so supportive and encouraging with contributions of $260 to CMN through 26 CD sales! Thank you to Kathy Dretsch for inviting me to be her guest there!
The next day, I traveled south for 3 hours to Coon Rapids where I met up with another civic organization, the Coon Rapids Lions Club. While I was there, I shared the vision for my platform, the Children’s Miracle Network, and my fundraising CD. And, in the mix of all of that, I was honored to recognize a very important member of their club, John Leggate. Six years ago, when John was diagnosed with cancer, he was told he had only a few months to live. He planned his funeral and spent his last few months with his family. Here we are today, and I was able to share his story and recognize him as a ‘miracle’ Inspiring American! He is healthier and happier than ever. Then came Thursday, which presented a very full day in my hometown of Detroit Lakes! It started out at the Detroit Lakes Middle School where I spoke to 160 7th graders. I will admit I was a little worried that 7th graders would feel ‘too cool’ to listen or ask questions, but boy was I wrong! They were so much fun! They were very attentive and asked some great questions. The best part was when I asked them, “Who has inspired you?” They shared some wonderful stories and some of them even nominated their inspiring person on the website!

From there, I went to Emmanuel Nursing home where I gave a small concert of the original music from my CMN fundraising CD Blessed Beyond Measure, which you can find on the Inspiring America website. They are planning on having a Miss America party at the nursing home and they told me they are sure that I am the next Miss America. Let's hope they are right! Either way it feels wonderful to have so much support and encouragement from every appearance I have done!

After that, I ran over to the D.L. pavilion center for the “Community Celebration Day,” which was a fundraiser for United Way. I had a booth available to sell CD’s, sign autographs and meet people. And, I was able to perform on stage, which is always a thrill for me!

To finish off the day, I went to the Detroit Lakes Mall and did a fashion show with Maurices, which was a fundraiser for the Humane Society called “Rescues and Runways.” Rescues & Runways is a national campaign created by maurices, in partnership with the ASPCA® American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. In its second year, the goals of this program have remained the same: to increase awareness of animal shelters, in turn, increasing pet adoptions through pet-themed fashion shows. More than 750 maurices locations across the U.S. are hosting the fashion shows along with raising supply and cash donations for our forever friends!By the time I left Detroit Lakes for the St. Paul parade on Friday evening, I had personally addressed 160 autographs to each 7th grader and got a case of writer’s cramp! With all the typing we do nowadays my hand kept cramping as I was writing their cards! They were all so excited to have their own personalized card so the cramps were worth it; I hope it is something they keep for awhile!

On Sunday morning, I was at the Mall of America for the Midwest Special Services Walk and Roll Fundraiser! There were over 500 people there to walk or roll around the mall in support of MSS. Being a part of all of these fundraisers never gets old…I love playing any role to help support these worthy causes.
Later that afternoon, I entered “pageant mode” attending the Miss Twin Cities Orientation. It is going to be a great competition with some outstanding talents; I can’t wait for it! Admittedly, it will feel a bit sad to officially hand over the title to someone new even though I surrendered my Miss Twin Cities role when I became Miss Minnesota (I think it was a good swap)! Miss Twin Cities/Capital City Pageant is Oct 23rd so mark your calendars!
While I was in pageant mode, we just kept going with it on Monday for the Miss America lottery to determine my competition group! Talk about exciting and nerve-racking!! This lottery dictates the order of my preliminary competition, and I was 47th to be picked. As you can imagine, after 46 other girls had selected their position, there wasn’t much left to choose from. But, I was thrilled to land a spot in the Alpha Group so I can perform my talent on the first night of preliminaries. I will be contestant three on each of the preliminary nights with competitions as follows: Monday Afternoon – Interview; Tuesday PM – Talent; Wednesday PM – On-stage Question; Thursday PM – Swimsuit and Evening Gown. My imagination is running wild as the reality of competing for Miss America is really sinking in!!
But, I had no time to savor that daydream because I had to immediately head to the Ivey Awards. My sister Kari accompanied me, which made the night all the more special for both of us! We met so many talented people around Minneapolis/St. Paul who are singers, dancers, choreographers, composers and designers. We were in great company!
See, I told you this was a busy week, but so much fun! It really does make the time fly!

An Afternoon of Inspiration!

I am writing this blog feeling overwhelmed with emotions from Sunday’s “Afternoon of Inspiration” concert in Moorhead. I literally get goose bumps thinking about it. It was the most beautiful uplifting day I’ve had; I am so deeply reminded of God’s wonderful grace and the presence he has in my life. He has truly blessed me beyond measure with this opportunity to serve Minnesota this year and to take the focus off the crown I wear and on to the people it represents. At this "Afternoon of Inspiration," we recognized five Inspiring Americans from the Moorhead area, whose stories left not a dry eye in the house, including myself (I have learned to wear waterproof mascara for these concerts)! (The picture above was one of our Inspiring Americans, Alyssa, a survivor of leukemia and the 2010 ND CMN Champion. ) All of the stories are incredible and I wish I could share them with you but you will have to read them on www.whohasinspiredyou.com. In between these remarkable stories, the new Miss Moorhead and Moorhead’s Outstanding Teen Organization were showcased with their talents and their service work. Congratulations to Tiffany Shulstad Peterson, the new Miss Moorhead and to the Red River Valley Outstanding Teen, Brianna Drevlow, who were crowned Saturday night. Savanna Tate Snyder, a past Miss Moorhead, absolutely captured the audience with her vocal talent. More impressive, however, was her ability to overcome a very challenging week with the passing of her grandfather and still be able to perform with such grace and heart at this concert. (I know he was at that concert, Savanna, and he was smiling down on you!) Another hit was the St. Joseph's Mens Choir who not only color coordinated perfectly with the colors of Inspiring America but entertained the audience!
We raised over $750 at this concert for the Children's Miracle Network so thank you so much to everyone who helped make this day happen and be a success!

The next one will take place in Maplewood on Oct. 2nd and we are looking for nominations of individuals in the Twin Cities area. Outside of being enormously inspired this past week, I also kept busy with the Jerry Lewis MDA telethon on Labor Day. I was at the Treasure Island Casino answering phones and taking donations…. And no, I didn’t gamble! This year, the MDA TELETHON ACHIEVED $58,919,838!! If you made a donation, thank you for your contribution.

I met quite a few youth who had some form of MD and they were so encouraging. They were similar to the amazing children at the Children’s Miracle Network hospitals--full of life and an energized spirit...precisely what I strive to take with me everywhere I go! I will be needing it especially this week with lots of traveling every day for appearances. I have a busy but exciting week planned so I look forward to sharing that with you next time!

Minnesota State Fair!

I hope everyone was able to get out to the Minnesota State Fair while it was open. I spent 13 hours there on Thursday and had the greatest time! My feet and stomach might tell you otherwise but it was well worth it! I thought it would be fun to do this blog more as a picture book instead because sometimes pictures are worth a thousand words, or at least a couple sentences in my case...

I started the day off at 7:30am at WCCO News to do an interview.

Throughout the day I stopped and gave numerous interviews with all the local media booths.

I was even able to perform at one of the stations, Garage Logic (1500 ESPN), with Joe Soucheray. He was a good sport. I gave him a hard time for trying to get me to write a song... about a tractor!?

After indulging in more than my fare share of fried fair food, I did a blindfolded food-eating contest on Twin Cities Live!

... and guess who won?!!!

While walking around the fair many people stopped me to say hi, take pictures, and sign autographs. My favorite encounters are when little children see me coming and have this wide-eyed gaze upon them. What they don't know is that it is just as special for me as it is for them.

All and all it was a fantastic day! But, on second thought, maybe it's a good thing the Minnesota State Fair only comes once a year.... you know, with the deliciously fattening food and all!

A week in Orlando!

I feel like I am always saying “the past few weeks have flown by!" But, it’s true! It’s already almost September, but I have been cherishing every moment so far as Miss Minnesota! I just got back from Orlando, Florida for the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Pageant. Our representative, Katarina Ackridge, did so incredibly well and I am so proud of her! The name of this pageant, "Outstanding Teen," is just perfect because every single one of the contestants is truly outstanding. They all have perfect GPA’s and amazing talents that blew me away! The new Miss America’s Outstanding Teen was Miss Oklahoma, a pianist.

While I was in Orlando, I had the awesome opportunity to meet all of the contestants I will be competing with at Miss America. I am so relieved and excited that I instantly made numerous friends. I can’t wait for Miss America week because I know it is going to be life changing! I roomed with Miss North Dakota whom I instantly connected with. Despite a very full schedule of events, we did have one night where we were able to relax by the poolside, mosquito free!

Some of the highlights of the week were going to Disney World (being able to skip all of the lines for rides was the best!) We did a few different video shoots while we were there. In some shots we were interviewed and others we were being videoed on the Tea Cup Ride or “acting naturally while walking, but looking excited!” Another video shoot every contestant had to do for internet promotions was the "60 second shot," which gave us one chance to explain or demonstrate to America why we should be the next Miss America. These videos will be online in October, so I will let you know when they are up (they may have the public vote on them!). We also went to a big fundraising dinner for the Miss America Organization where four other instrumentalists and I provided background music for the party. This event provided me the opportunity to play some of my original pieces from "Blessed Beyond Measure"on the piano.

Another highlight for me was doing a photo shoot for La Casa Hermosa with Miss Hawaii, Miss Iowa and Miss Maryland. La Casa Hermosa was my state evening gown dress designer (as well as the other three contestants) and is a sponsor for the Miss America Organziation. Miss America, Caressa Cameron, was there as well so we were able to watch her first before modeling some dresses ourselves. The photos possibly will be in the Four Points Magazine so I will keep you posted on that!

On Saturday morning we had an orientation meeting for the contestants. I think it finally sunk in that I have the unbelievable opportunity to compete for the job of Miss America and make lifelong friendships and scholarship dollars while I'm at it! Spread the word that Miss America will be televised on ABC on January 15th, but if you want to take a vacation in January, I'd love to see you in Vegas! I had a wonderful time in Florida, but I'm excited to get back into the busy schedule in Minnesota of making appearances (with the State Fair coming up this week), volunteering at Gillette Specialty Healthcare, raising money for CMN, and planning Night of Inspiration Concerts while also preparing for Miss America! It's going to be a whirlwind of a next four months, but I'm ready for it!

Pageants, Blizzards and Festivals, Oh my!

Congratulations to the newly crowned Miss Heart of the Lakes, Miss Perham, Miss Midwest, Miss Morris and Miss Thief River Falls! You all have a very exciting year ahead of you and I look forward to what God has in store for all of the Miss MN class of 2011!

I am most excited to share with you about my Night of Inspiration Concert in Thief River Falls on Monday night August 2nd. It was such a great success on so many levels. There was a great showing of people that came to watch and support their community members. We recognized 9 Inspiring Americans during the concert and had such unique talent that was shared with everyone! We even had Chantall Wilson who was in London nominate someone over Skype since she couldn't be there for the concert. You can read these inspiring stories at whohasinspiredyou.com. I was moved to tears by the end of the concert and honestly didn’t want it to end! People were moved as well and truly gave generously to the Children’s Miracle Network. With the total sales from my CD’s, T-shirts, cookies and donations, it came out to be almost $2,000 raised for the Children’s Miracle Network! Tuesday was the Night to Unite – National Night Out! I didn’t realize how big of an event this is nation wide! I was in Richfield meeting and greeting people, signing autographs and taking a ton of pictures! (222 to be exact!) It was a really fun night because I love to meet new people and they were so appreciative of having Miss Minnesota there!

Wednesday night I was part of the kickoff telethon for Miracle Treat day. I hope you made it out to your local Dairy Queen for blizzard because almost all Dairy Queens donated some if not all of the proceeds from sales of Blizzards that day to CMN. I had more than my fair share of blizzards! I even had a man ask me to try his first before he did to make sure it was okay! (I assured him it was!) I was also excited on Thursday for Miracle Treat Day because I started the day out at Gillette with Miss America and Miss Minnesota’s Outstanding Teen handing out blizzards to the patients. After a few hours there, I went to the Dairy Queen in Eagan and later on the Dairy Queen in Woodbury! It was a long day, but very rewarding to speak with families from Gillette and to see how excited people were!

On Saturday I was ‘on the road again…going places that I’ve never been,’ all the way towards Duluth to Tamarack for their annual Hey Days Festival. This year was their 50th anniversary so they invited Miss Minnesota there to be a part of their event! They had a parade and I crowned the King and Queen who sold the most buttons for their festival. The winner sold over 600 buttons! They had lots of food vendors and games/activities, including a dunk tank that apparently everyone thought I needed to do! I decided I would prefer to be the dunker and not the dunkee! It was a very hot day but so much fun to meet so many new people and to be in a place that I’ve never been to before.

It is truly an honor and privilege to represent this fine state and its people!

"A Day in the Life of Miss Minnesota: Sunrise to Sunset”

This past Thursday, July 28th, was packed from sunrise to sunset! My day started with an interview in Moorhead on KVLY Channel 11, Valley News Live from 5:30 – 7:00AM, which means that I was up before the sun! Fortunately, the host who conducted my interview, Steve Poitras from KVLY, joked so much that I didn’t even think about being a bit sleepy at 5:00am! Further, this television interview presented a great opportunity to promote two of my upcoming “Night of Inspiration” Concerts taking place in Thief River Falls (August 2nd) and Moorhead (September 12th). Hillery from Sanford Children Hospital (formally known as Merit Care), a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital, also joined me to promote the concerts as Sanford Health will directly benefit from the money raised through these events. For those who are unaware of the “Night of Inspiration” Concerts, they are an integral part of my platform Inspiring America: Crowning the Good in Your Neighborhood.

The "Night of Inspiration" Concerts have been used to showcase the true strength and spirit of America furthering the cycle of positive inspiration around Minnesota with the intent to bring it nationwide as Miss America. These "Night of Inspiration" Concerts offer flexibility to meet the specific desires of each community. In many Minnesota communities, the concert is used to unite communities by showcasing local talent and sharing uplifting stories of their neighbors. In other communities, the concert is used to inspire youth to excellence by offering testimonies that compel them to make positive choices amidst growing pressure. Also, these concerts specifically highlight the most courageous children and their families who can inspire all of us with their gracious displays of strength. These concerts have served as an opportunity to raise money for the Children's Miracle Network through a free will donation. Additionally, the sale of my CD, “Blessed Beyond Measure,” featuring 12 of my original works, is also being sold at these concerts and at all appearances (also available at www.whohasinspiredyou.com) to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network and the Miss Minnesota Scholarship Organization.

While I was in Moorhead doing the interview at Sanford Children’s Hospital, Hillery gave me a tour of the facility. It was incredible! A local artist from Detroit Lakes, who wrote a children’s book, transformed the hospital into the world of his characters. This man is a sculptor, artist, and author who has made the hospital truly magical creating an atmosphere that instantly uplifts the children there...talk about inspiration!
Later that evening, I was at the Becker County Fair with one of our fantastic State sponsors, “Dazzle Me Jewels.” They have been so generous with their beautiful and unique jewelry. "Blessed Beyond Measure"

Why is it that summer always flies by? I cannot believe it is already almost August! I hope all of you are having an enjoyable summer and are getting a chance to appreciate some of the incredibly beautiful days we have been blessed with! I feel so fortunate that the recent local pageants have been around my hometown so not only can I perform my duties as Miss Minnesota, but I also get to enjoy some time at the lake (by the way, that also means any other titleholders attending local pageants in the Detroit Lakes/Perham area have an open invitation to spend time at my cabin as well). The Miss Frazee Pageant and Parade took place this past weekend where Emily Paige Kallis took the title of Miss Frazee 2010! I know she will continue the Frazee legacy of hard working and caring titleholders. I am so amazed at how much scholarship money the Miss Frazee Pageant awards to their contestants; they deserve recognition for that accomplishment! Thank you to the Frazee committee and community for making your pageant such a wonderful opportunity for young ladies to receive scholarships (while also gaining so much more along the way)!

This past weekend also marked a big moment for me as Miss Minnesota…my CD was released! "Blessed Beyond Measure" features a compilation of 12 pieces I composed during the most inspirational moments of my life. Throughout my journey with Inspiring America, I have met countless individuals who have inspired me with abundant strength and determination, some of the most notable being the inspiring children at Gillette Children's Hospital. The instrumental pieces on this CD reflect feelings of hope, strength, courage and peace that all of these children and many others, like myself, have experienced during life's greatest joys and adversities. With the incredible God-given gift of writing music, it is my goal to give this gift back to God by Inspiring America through music that captures the essence of the inspiration that surrounds us every day. "Blessed Beyond Measure" will be used to raise money for the Children's Miracle Network with a personal goal to raise over $10,000. The CD will be sold at every event I participate in and will also be available at www.whohasinspiredyou.com. Making Dreams Come True

On Monday morning (July 12th), I drove back to St. Paul and did a “Magical Moments with Miss Minnesota” event for Alexis Cox’s 6th birthday party. I was able to share my gift of music on piano with the girls and then we talked about how and where they can use their God given gifts to inspire others. We decorated crowns and banners, and I gave each of the girls a mini makeover with a little makeup and nail painting. We took fashion photos and then made lovely memorabilia cards with the pictures and a certificate I gave each girl to use their gift to inspire and bless those around them. I sure wish I could have had a birthday party like that when I was younger…or even now -- it was so much fun!

On Wednesday, my sister Kari drove with me to Minnesota Lake for FestAg Days. This is an event that Miss Minnesota has gone to every year! (Kari remembers going to this event when she was Miss MN!) Everyone was so welcoming. I met so many different titleholders and had such a great time in their parade (which almost got stormed out but fortunately it concluded just in time for the outdoor pageant in the evening!).

Thursday morning, I headed to Gillette Children’s Hospital for their Annual Fireman’s Carnival Fundraiser. As you can imagine, with the word “carnival” being in the event title, it was a really fun day. I met so many different families (and adorable children!!) from Gillette, not to mention countless volunteers from fireman and their families to make the event a special day for the children. There was face painting, food (dilly bars from DQ, my favorite), games, and tons of prizes. I truly love and support the partnership the Miss America Organization has formed with the Children’s Miracle Network and I look forward to the rest of my year volunteering at Gillette.

On Friday, I got spoiled…or should I say pampered…every woman’s dream! I started the morning off meeting Lisa from CoCo and Chloe, a fantastic sponsor of the Miss Minnesota Organization. She provided me some great clothing items and jewelry for me to keep! (As I wear it, I will take pictures so you can see what great items they have to offer!)In the meantime, check out their website, www.COCOANDCHLOE.com. On my way home to Detroit Lakes, I went to the Elk River Fair where I met another great sponsor, Dazzle Me Jewels. They were so sweet and gracious and I now have so many pieces of jewelry!! On Sunday, I was in the Detroit Lakes Water Carnival Parade. I was very excited about this parade because it is always the longest parade to watch (and be in), and it happens to be in my home town! There were so many people I knew along the route, which made it even more fun to wave at everyone and see them waving back and cheering for me! Again, we were blessed with great weather for a parade!

In between all my fun events, I also continued to work on Miss America paperwork, which was due this Monday (July 19th). As many of you know, I love to perform my original works on piano, so it was really difficult to decide what to play on the Miss America stage…and for only 90 seconds! Quite a task to ensure that all 48 documents were signed, sealed, and delivered on time and in order, but mission was accomplished!

From parades to birthday parties, to meeting inspiring people, and getting beautiful clothes and jewelry, the job of Miss Minnesota is a difficult one, as you can tell. I thank God every day for the people he has placed in my life and for the wonderful opportunity I have to make a big difference in others and myself.

Home Sweet Home

This past Thursday (July 8th), I was in Isanti for the Isanti Rodeo Days Parade with my dear friend and supporter, Lisa McKinnis. Lisa operates “In His Steps” Dance Studio in Cambridge at the Willow Bridge Wellness Center. I had the opportunity to make an appearance there as Miss Twin Cities, and Lisa kindly invited me back as Miss Minnesota to join her float with all of her dance students. Being around all of these sweet girls made me wish all the more that my mother had put me in dance lessons! As we rode down the street we all smiled, waved and some of the girls even danced…now that’s talent to be able to dance on a moving trailer!

On Friday, I was at the Miss Northwest Pageant. It was so exciting to be in my hometown again! Hearing and seeing all of the support when I introduced myself and performed an original composition on piano was a bit overwhelming! Congratulations to Melissa Paakh on winning Miss Northwest, a senior in high school no less! We are all proud of Lexy Okeson, now former Miss Northwest, for her great job representing the northwest area at Miss Minnesota this year.

After a very busy first few weeks as Miss Minnesota with appearances, paperwork, recording my new CD “Blessed Beyond Measure” (available soon!), photoshoots, and more, I was blessed to spend most of Saturday with my family and close friend, Bethany Beniek (Miss Moorhead). Bethany and I participated in the Pelican Rapids Parade in the morning, and then Bethany was in for a whole new experience - water-skiing! If anyone comes to visit the Knuttila family at the lake, they can’t leave without at least trying to water ski. It’s not an option; it’s a rule! No doubt, it produces lots of fun and plenty of laughs!!

From fun to work. I am still working at the Catholic Church in Frazee as the music director so I was blessed to have Bethany sing with me at our Saturday mass. Then, Aja Majkrzak (Miss South Central) joined us on her violin for the Sunday mass. Both ladies are so talented; it was a great treat for the parish to hear such beautiful music!

After mass on Sunday, I was in a boat parade on Detroit Lake, which is an event they just added back into the Water Carnival this year. It was a perfect day for a boat parade; we couldn’t have asked for anything more with the warm sunshine mixed with a bit of a breeze. The best part was that my little nephews joined me on the boat to wave to everyone on the beach.

In the mix of pageant appearances and work, this weekend was also my opportunity to celebrate the birth of the most special man in my life - my dad! With so much focus on my year ahead as Miss Minnesota, it was nice to be able to place the focus on him for a day – he certainly deserves that and so much more! HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAD!!!

Celebrating the Spirit of America every day—my amazing job as Miss Minnesota 2010

I can't believe how fast the days are flying by and how much I’m able to fit into each day!

Thursday, June 24, I was invited to be a host for the Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare fundraiser at the Marriot in Roseville. I met so many fun people that night and was even able to sample some of the amazing desserts they provided. It was a very big event with free food and wine/martini samples for the guests, and there were too many silent auctions items to count! It was jam packed all night, so I hope they were able to raise a lot of funds for Gillette.

Before I headed out for the weekend, I was in the studio recording a CD of 12 of my original piano compositions. I will be selling them at all the events I can. All proceeds will go directly to the Children’s Miracle Network. I’ll keep you all posted as to when the CDs will be available.

Over the weekend, I went from one end of the state to the other to participate in local pageants that have already begun for the Miss Minnesota Class of 2011. I was in Winona Friday night, Brainerd Lakes Saturday night, and Marshall County Sunday afternoon. Congratulations to the past titleholders for your years of service and to the new titleholders for winning your titles. Minnesota has some very intelligent and talented young women being represented in our local pageant organization!

That whirlwind weekend was topped off Monday night when I met Miss America, Caressa Cameron, at the DSW store in the Mall of America. She was very sweet and personable! (DSW is Miss America’s official shoe sponsor.) It's so exciting to think I will be competing for Miss America’s incredible job in just a few short months!

I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable 4th of July weekend. Let's celebrate the Spirit of America on this anniversary of our Independence.

The Journey Begins...

Four days now and counting since I was crowned Miss Minnesota, and I’m still not sure if it has sunk in yet. It has been a whirlwind since Saturday night’s crowning!

On Monday, my phone was ringing off the hook with congratulation messages and interviews. On Tuesday, I had the opportunity to be on “TWIN CITIES LIVE.” They asked me to try to stump them by playing TV theme songs on the piano. It was so much fun! I am so incredibly excited, honored, and privileged to have this great responsibility of being Miss Minnesota 2010. I want to say a very big thank you to all the local titleholders I spent the week with. This was the best group of young women, and they truly cared for one another and the organization. I’m very much looking forward to all the upcoming local pageants so I can see you ladies again!

Thank you to everyone who has supported me through my years of competing. I have big plans for this year, and I hope you continue to encourage me through this journey.
